We wandered past here during National Doughnut Day and decided to grab a snack as all we had to eat were, naturally, doughnuts. We were attracted by both the storefront and the painting on the side (of a very long wiener dog).
Fancy Franks Gourmet Hot Dogs
Location: 326 College St
Hours: Sunday to Wednesday: 11am to 11pm
Thursday to Saturday: 11am to 1am
Atmosphere: Relaxed and homey
There is a huge chalkboard menu to the side of the counter, but the lady at the cash immediately gave us mini menus since we were nearly staring up at the ceiling.
As we were looking for a snack to tide us over until dinnertime, we decided to split one. We ordered the FFGHD TX, which I had no idea how to pronounce (later the cashier told me it stands for Fancy Franks Gourmet Hot Dogs, Texas-style). We noticed the menu had a lot of other items, such as sides of fries, mini doughnuts, and milkshakes.
The service was very friendly and she offered to have it cut in half for us. We sat down to wait for our order on one of the many bar-style tables and stools, and we noticed a stack of children’s books (all dog/hot dog/Frank-related!) next to the condiment stand, which was a cute touch.
Spicy onions, cheddar, BBQ sauce and chipotle mayo make up the FFGHD TX. The onions were definitely hot and if I was sitting down, I would have added a touch of mayo to cut through the spice. The skin of the sausage is a little difficult to bite through, and as we were eating ours on the run. I did enjoy the texture though, as it was firm and didn’t mush upon contact.
They have a new location at 940 Bloor St W, between Dufferin and Christie subway stations. We will definitely be back to try more hot dogs, and top it off with their milkshakes and mini doughnuts!
