Located in neo-Koreatown, Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu has many locations around Toronto. We decided to stop by on a chilly Saturday night, and arrived at the Yonge location looking forward to some warm soup.

There is definitely nothing fancy about this place; very cramped, stuffy, and bare bones, but it is known for their silken tofu stew. We ordered the one with kimchi (combo 3) and the bulgogi soup (combo 8).
As with all Korean restaurants, a few side dishes came once we ordered.
The purple rice came next in stone pots, and the servers scooped it out into bowls and then poured water in the pots to make the porridge-like rice you can eat later. The bubbling bowls of soup came after, and if you order the tofu stew, they provide you with an egg you should crack in right away in order to ensure it is cooked properly (and perfectly poached).
The stew was delicious; I ordered it medium and it had enough spice for flavour but I didn’t find myself needing water to cool down. The tofu was indeed very soft and the kimchi added a tang to the traditional style stew. The bulgogi soup is a sweeter dish, and was good to cleanse the palate from the spice.
Buk Chang Dong definitely knows how to make a great stew; if you don’t mind cramped interiors (literally inches away from the next table), this is a great place for a meal on a cold day.
