I like a very specific type of doughnut – the soft, pillowy yeast ones are by far my favourite. While I have found favourites across the world, I was itching for a more accessible favourite, and when I first laid eyes on the doughnuts from Dipped, I had high hopes.

My absolute favourite doughnut was the one I had from Dough (fun fact: I did not even buy this doughnut but my friend let me eat so much of it that I don’t know how we still didn’t finish it). I have been sorely disappointed at finding alternatives here, and definitely no place offered a hibiscus doughnut.
When I told my friend I was going to Portland, besides warning me of its weirdness, he highly recommended Voodoo Doughnuts.

We were walking around Smorgasburg at Brooklyn Bridge Park, and came across this doughnut stand. With a variety of yeast doughnuts with amazing toppings, the hibiscus one caught our eye due to its bright magenta-red icing… and it did not disappoint. We just tried one doughnut and it was enough for me to know that this is probably the best doughnut I’ve ever had.

So Friday, June 6th marked National Doughnut Day for 2014 (first Friday of June). My friend and I ventured over to Jelly Modern Doughnuts, which I have always wanted to try after seeing a photo of a jelly doughnut covered with poppyseed glaze on BlogTo. It turned out to only be a monthly special, so I put it on my mental “to-eat” list and left it at that.
The morning of the 6th, I checked their website and realized it was coincidentally this month’s special (or ‘fate’). Thankfully there were still rows of them left when we went there around 2pm.

I have passed by the Little Nicky’s sign a few times, but was always when I was in a rush. Finally, I had the chance to stop by with my sister a few days ago for a quick pick-me-up. Hidden away along Peter St (their address is a bit tricky), it is a great place for a drink and a light snack.
